When we think about paint, most of the time we’re only concerned about the colour. But there’s more that warrants every homeowner’s attention when painting your home – different paint finishes can create dramatically different effects, in turn changing the entire tone of the room. In the past year, we have seen interior designers decidedly taking a step away from traditional glossy paint treatments in favour of matte paint finishes instead. We round up the following tips from Elle Décor on how you can incorporate this hot trend in your home.

Go Bold in High-Traffic Areas
For the uninitiated, you will be glad to know that matte paint can be as durable as glossy paint, and can stand well against humidity as well (perfect for the Singaporean weather!) As such, do not be afraid to use them in high-traffic areas such as the kitchen. Matte paints are also far more forgiving than glossy paint when it comes to uneven and old surfaces – while glossy paint will reflect light and highlight these imperfections, matte paint does just the opposite. Definitely something that resale flat owners might want to keep in mind!

It’s All About Contrast
The muted sheen and rich finish of matte paints are perfect for your living room and study, as they help to highlight your wall décor. Matte paints are particularly suitable for gallery walls due to their soft luxe finish, which bring a touch of elegance to the overall look. To play up the contrast between shine and sheen, we recommend metallic frames for your paintings.

Deep and Vivid is the Way to Go
Matte paints are high pigmented and can offer good full coverage regardless of colour. On top of that, matte paints offer a softer and more muted look, making them a perfect tool for adventurous colour play – while vivid shades in glossy paint might border on the garish, matte finishes imparts a “soft light” effect on deep and bright colours, transitioning them into luxurious hues. Let your colour imagination run wild with deep purples, wine red, charcoals and so on.

Mix It Up with Stripes
One creative way of introducing visual interest to your walls is to use a mix of matte and glossy paints of the same colour in alternating stripes. The different finishes will create an illusion of two different shades, creating an interesting detail for your walls in a subtle way. Our favourites are black for a classy and timeless look, and gold for a luxe and opulent feel.

Start Small with Trims and Doors
For homeowners who are still not entirely convinced, we recommend that you start small (and safe) by first using matte paints on doors and trims. That said, still, be creative by playing with colours and contrast! Dark matte trims and doors against light walls can give rise to a memorable and unconventional look. On the other hand, white matte trims juxtaposed against colourful walls can instantly up the chic quotient of the entire space.
